The presumption that concepts, arguments, and ideas are timeless has been replaced in recent decades by an awareness of their unavoidable historicity and temporality. Based on methods proposed by such scholars as Reinhart Koselleck, Quentin Skinner, John Pocock, and Michel Foucault which focus on the use of language in a historical context, conceptual history serves as an innovative and rigorous approach to the analysis of key social and political concepts, arguments and ideas. The goal of conceptual history is to illuminate the concepts and ideas that are central to the operation of political and social life through the study of their migration, reception, translation, and diffusion through time and space. Conceptual analysis involves looking at larger semantic, discursive, ideological and rhetorical settings in which concepts are given meaning. Doing conceptual history therefore demands familiarity with a variety of linguistically oriented approaches to discourse, ideology as well as rhetoric. In the summer of 2010, Concepta, International Research School in Conceptual History and Political Thought, and its partner institutions will organise the sixth Introduction to Conceptual History summer school. An international team of distinguished scholars and visiting lecturers will help participants critically examine the chief concepts in the humanities and social sciences from new perspectives. The summer school has two main objectives. First, it introduces students to the fundamental aspects of the theory and methodology of conceptual history, which they can then use as tools in their own research. Second, it explores contemporary trends in conceptual history through case studies. The course includes a series of lectures, a seminar and workshops. It is designed for Finnish and international PhD and advanced Master’s degree students from various academic fields. Interest in the humanities and/or political thought is an asset. The successful completion of the Summer School will require attending the lectures, seminar and workshops as well as the completion of a written assignment. To receive the six ECTS credits, students must actively participate in the course and write a 10-15 page essay. Students who wish to receive 10 ECTS credits must submit a 20-25 page essay in addition to active participation. Students should submit all essays to the organisers approximately one month after the conclusion of the Summer School. Participants are encouraged to contact the organisers if they would like to present their own work in progress in conceptual history and related fields in the workshops. The 4th Christina Conference on Gender Studies Gender, Nature and Culture
Helsinki, Finland 20.-22. May 2010 Registration for the 4th Christina Conference on Gender Studies is now open. Recent research has increasingly viewed nature and culture as inherently entangled and inseparable, suggesting that nature is often understood through discourses of gender and, conversely, that gender is made sense of through historically contingent assumptions about nature. Building on this growing body of scholarship, the conference asks how this mutual intertwining of nature, culture and gender has been theorized, represented and experienced in the past as well as the present. Aleksanteri-instituutin Kulttuurifoorumi
kevät 2010 Aleksanteri-instituutin kulttuurifoorumin kuukausittaiset tapaamiset jatkuvat heti tammikuussa. Vuoden 2010 kokoavana teemana on venäläinen aatehistoria ja filosofia, ja ensimmäinen tilaisuus järjestetään jo 18.1. otsikolla "1900-luvun venäläisen kaunokirjallisuuden ja maantieteen vuoropuhelua luonnosta". Kulttuurifoorumi on venäläiseen kulttuuriin ja sen tutkimukseen keskittyvä luento- ja keskustelusarja. Kuukausittaisissa tapaamisissa eri alojen tutkijat ja taitelijat pohtivat tieteen, taiteen ja yhteiskunnan välisiä suhteita sekä kulttuurintutkimuksen haasteita erityisesti Venäjän ja Neuvostoliiton kontekstissa. Mistä puhumme kun puhumme "venäläisestä kulttuurista"? Miten politiikka, uskonto tai etiikka kietoutuvat yhteen kulttuurin ja taiteen kanssa? Entä historia - tallentaako vai muokkaako taide sitä? Professor John Burgess (Princeton University, Department of Philosophy) will give two talks at the Department of Philosophy (Univ. Helsinki):
First talk, 22.4, 16.30 (!), Room A10: Truth in Fictionalism Abstract Fictionalism about any arbitrary subject matter seems to require realism about other subject matters. Even if there is a coherent fictionalism about fictional characters, for example, it's hard to make sense of fictionalism about fictions themselves. Hence the modal fictionalist's concern that prefixes like 'According to the tall-tale of extreme modal realism...' may turn out to be ineluctably modal. Fictionalism about truth would therefore seem to be a non-starter---not because fictions are intuitively false, but because the notion of truth seems to be implicated in the semantics of fictionalization prefixes. Yet something like the revolutionary fictionalist stance toward alethic discourse would be a sensible reaction to the inconsistency theory of truth (which Matti Eklund and others have argued convincingly is an attractive response to the semantic paradoxes). The purpose of this paper, then, is just to make the world safe for alethic fictionalism, by showing that the most promising versions of fictionalism in general provide for a coherent fictionalism about truth in particular. The second talk, 23.4, 12.30 (!), Room A10: An Alethic Theory of Reference Abstract: Inferentialists are divided over deflationism about representational notions like truth and reference. Inferential- or conceptual-role semantics provides a more "substantive" theory of reference than the sort of anaphoric account on offer in Brandom. This opposition obscures an alternative in the theory of reference available to deflationists and inflationists alike (provided we abandon the correspondence theory of truth constitutive of referentialism). The alternative emerges upon recognition of the fact that the theory of reference involves two separable projects, usually run together: to specify the referent of an arbitrary term, and to explain what it takes for a term to refer in the first place. In the general spirit of conceptual-role semantics, I develop an explanation of referential success that essentially involves the notion of truth (coupled with a familiar, deflationary specification of referents). Very roughly, the idea is just that an expression refers iff it can be used to state a truth. The most troubling objection to this style of view arguably has to do with the phenomena of referential indeterminacy. Dealing with this objection leads to a speculative resolution of the problem of the many, and a diagnosis of the urge to posit vagueness in the world.
