Arts, University of Helsinki invites applications for

ONE DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITION

in the Academy of Finland funded project DiaMind: Logical and Communicative
Aspects of Iconicity led by Prof. Ahti-Veikko Pietarinen. The length of the
doctoral student position is 36 months, beginning on January 1, 2014.

Description of the DiaMind project

The project DiaMind: Logical and Communicative aspects of Iconicity (PI
Prof. A.-V. Pietarinen), funded by the Academy of Finland for until 2017,
investigates the logic of the future and emerging forms of thought and
communication. It seeks to ground scientific and technological discovery
and invention on diagrammatic and iconic notions and practices of
representation. The project aims at bridging the gap between meaning and
expression, thought and language, and metaphor and imagination, by a close
investigation of the nature of such diagrammatic and iconic notions.

The relevant background studies and eligible research projects should fall
within, among others, philosophy of mind, science, logic and language,
diagrammatic logics and mental models, pragmatism, Peirce, cognitive and
communication sciences, semiotics, semantics and pragmatics. The project
cooperates with several units and research teams in Finland and abroad,
including the Peirce Research Centre and the Metaphysical Club at Helsinki,
The Nordic and European Pragmatism Network, and the Universities of Aarhus,
Tallinn, Harvard, Indiana, KAIST and Zhejiang.

Duties and eligibility of a doctoral student

The duties of a doctoral student consist of working on his or her own
doctoral thesis and completing his or her postgraduate studies. The duties
also include modest teaching and other research-related tasks.

A doctoral student applying for this position must hold a second-cycle
degree and have an approved research proposal falling under the themes of
the DiaMind project. Excellent research collaboration and organizational
skills are required. Other requirements include the ability and motivation,
as demonstrated in previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue
postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and
research proposal. The appointee must hold the right to pursue doctoral
studies at the University of Helsinki by the time the appointment begins.

Salary

The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and
work experience. At the beginning of the employment period doctoral
student’s salary may range from €2141 to €2231 gross per month, for
full-time work in Finland. The appointments start with a probationary
period of four months.
